marilyn-monroe-fan-death-anniversary.jpgFifty years after her death, Marilyn Monroe is still as relevant as ever. This year alone she was the center of an Oscar-nominated film, "My Week With Marilyn," as well as the driving force of NBC's hit new musical series, "Smash."

So it's no surprise that her fans flocked to celebrate her on the 50th anniversary of her passing on Sunday, August 5, 2012. Fan clubs organized memorials throughout the week, and on Sunday, fans, friends, and relatives held a ceremony at her grave site at in Westwood Village Memorial Park in Los Angeles, CA.

The tribute was held in a hall, with a live video feed streamed to a tent outside to accommodate the crowd. Several Marilyn impersonators visited, according to the New Zealand Herald. Her gravesite, which has grown stained over the years from the many fans touching the plaque and giving it lipstick kisses, became a shrine. Fans left photos, flowers, and artwork to commemorate the anniversary.
