'MasterChef Junior': Tommy Peters always has to remember the salt
Tommy: I first started cooking when I was 6 years old or about 6. I'm 11. So when I first mixed together eggs, flour and milk, I was freaking out, because I had just made batter, and I thought that was so cool. I love the science part of cooking.
Zap2it : What's your favorite thing to prepare?
Tommy : I love cooking pork, because it's such a hard thing to cook. You can easily overcook it or undercook it. One of the things I do with seasoning is I don't put in enough salt. A lot of people are saying that I don't put in a lot of salt, but I put in a good amount of pepper.
In one of the videos I watched of [ "MasterChef" judge and chef] Gordon Ramsay, he said that when you're cooking food, it basically takes away the flavor. We cook meat to cook away the parasites and everything, all the bad stuff in it -- and also, it tastes good. But while doing that, it also takes away certain parts of the flavor, so salt brings out that flavor very well.
Zap2it : Future plans?
Tommy : I really want to go to culinary school and be a professional chef and run a restaurant. I do love other things, too, and could get into something else, but my No. 1 goal is to open a restaurant.
[NOTE: Tommy Peters breakfast burger got him eliminated last week.]
