Matt Damon addresses gay rumors around Ben Affleck friendship

matt-damon-ben-affleck-gay-rumors-gi.jpgEver since Matt Damon and Ben Affleck hit the pop culture consciousness with the Academy Award-winning "Good Will Hunting," tabloids have speculated that the pair might be more than just friends. And Damon never addressed the rumors -- with good reason.

"I never denied those rumors because I was offended and didn't want to offend my friends who were gay--as if being gay were some kind of f***ing disease," he tells Playboy magazine. "It put me in a weird position in that sense. The whole thing was just gross."

Damon stars with Michael Douglas in HBO's upcoming Liberace biography, "Behind The Candelabra," in which Damon portrays the famous pianist's longtime lover, Scott Thorson. Liberace, having lived in a different era, spent his life in the closet. But as Damon notes, there have been signs of progress toward a better acceptance of gay people.

"[T]he fact that Anderson Cooper and Ellen DeGeneres can come out so beautifully and powerfully, and it's a big f***ing deal that it turns out nobody gives a s***," he says. "If Liberace were alive today, everybody would love his music and nobody would care what he did in his private life. Like with Elton John."
