Meet 'Brooklyn Nine Nine's' Melissa Fumero: A 'shameless hairbrush singer,' plus 21 more facts

melissa-fumero-brooklyn-9-9-ones-to-watch.jpgIf you know Melissa Fumero, it's probably from her several years on "One Life to Live" playing Adriana Cramer. She also had a recurring part on Season 4 of "Gossip Girl" and has guest-starred on shows like "The Mentalist" and "CSI: NY."

Aside from a one-off appearance on "Men at Work" earlier this year, though, Fumero had very little experience in comedy before joining FOX's new series "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," which premieres Tuesday (Sept. 17). The thing is, though, you'd hardly know it -- Fumero more than holds her own opposite Andy Samberg, who plays her partner in the show set at a police precinct.

Her ultra-competitive character, Detective Amy Santiago, can't stand the way Samberg operates, which would often mean that Amy is the off-putting stickler for regulations. The way she's written and Fumero plays her, though, you can pretty well understand the chip on her shoulder -- and enjoy the comic possibilities.

For that reason, Fumero is one of Zap2it's Ones to Watch for the 2013-14 season. Get to know her better with the following Q-and-A:

What's the current home-screen picture on your phone?
A picture I took of the San Remo building from the lake in Central Park. It has a cool filter on it.

"On Top of the World" by Imagine Dragons.

What's the most embarrassing song on your iPod?
"Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries" from the Broadway show "Fosse." (yes, I'm a musical theatre nerd)

Aliens! In my mind they wouldn't be dangerous, they'd be fascinating and would bring the world together. I'm a glass half-full kind of girl.

What's the last item you purchased?
A Karen Millen dress for an upcoming event.

Do you have any current pop-culture obsessions?
I'm realizing I'm not hip enough to know for sure what would be considered pop-culture.

I was in love with my next-door neighbor Louis, and I physically chased him around my birthday party and grabbed his face and planted a big one right on the lips. It was my 5th birthday.

What's your spirit animal?
A wolf ... but when I asked my husband, he said "a duck-billed platypus." It made me laugh, so I didn't even ask why. I don't need to know.

Paris. I've wanted to go my whole life. It's on the agenda for next year!
