Meet 'The X Factor' finalist: Marcus Canty
So here are a few things you probably didn't know about Marcus Canty:
Hometown: Bowie, MD
Coach: L.A. Reid
Musical influences: Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Bobby Brown, Usher, Beyonce
Favorite album: "Confessions" - Usher
On his strengths: "My strong point is my vocals and my ability to perform."
On his interesting path to the audition: "I actually auditioned on YouTube...[Producers] called me back three weeks later and were like, 'We need you in Seattle' [for the on-screen audition]. My mom didn't know how she was going to get me there, she didn't have the money...but one of my mom's co-workers gave her [an airplane ticket]...and from there it just went on."
On taking the stage for the audition: "I wasn't nervous, but it was the waiting that really got me. I got on stage, I got a standing ovation from everybody. It was crazy."
If he could perform any song on "The X Factor": "A Woman's Work" - Maxwell
On auditioning for and not making "American Idol" four years ago: "I auditioned back in Season 7 and I kinda got a bad taste...Randy told me I sounded like a chipmunk. And Paula was just like 'work on your upper range a little bit.' Simon didn't say anything...They all said 'No.' I don't think I was ready then. Now I'm ready. I know I'm ready."
