Mel Gibson: Joe Eszterhas releases book 'Heaven and Mel'
Amazon will release the tome as part of its Kindle Single program on June 6, according to TheWrap.
"On a human level it's a great story, and it can't be told in a nine-page letter," Eszterhas says, referring to a letter he released detailing Gibson's alleged anti-Semitic speech. "Much of it is amusing, some of it is very serious and has to do with anti-Semitism and questions of values. But mostly it's just very human. I view it as a terrific tale."
Eszterhas and Gibson were supposed to work together on a film about the Maccabees, a Jewish rebel army in the second century. But when Eszterhas' screenplay was rejected by Gibson, Eszterhas accused Gibson of making anti-Semitic remarks and threatening to kill his ex Oksana Grigorieva. Later Eszterhas provided audio proof of Gibson's tirades in a recording allegedly made at Gibson's home in Costa Rica in December 2011.
The book promises to shed even more light on Gibson's erratic behavior.
"I can't remember ever reading a more haunting, nuanced portrait of a Hollywood superstar in decline," Dave Blum, editor of Kindle Singles, says. "This is an eyewitness account by a gifted storyteller of a man of faith at war with his demons. In the end, the demons win."
