Melissa McCarthy's 'Tammy' gets big Fourth of July holiday release
Warner Bros. has slotted a July 2, 2014 opening for "Tammy," placing it in direct competition with Sony's comedy "Sex Tape" starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel and Disney's fairy tale extravaganza "Maleficent" starring Angelina Jolie.
No doubt Warners is feeling confident in the Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning McCarthy's drawing power after she helped the studio's February comedy "Identity Thief" outperform expectations and become one of the few genuine hits so far in 2013.
While the move is unlikely to faze Disney, the question now is whether or not Sony blinks considering the far more mixed track record of both Diaz and Segel at the box office.
"Tammy" stars McCarthy as a recently unemployed woman who discovers her husband has been cheating and takes off a road trip with her boozehound grandma. Kathy Bates, Susan Sarandon, Mark Duplass, Dan Aykroyd and Allison Janney co-star. McCarthy also co-wrote the script with her husband, actor Ben Falcone who will also make his directing debut on the project.
McCarthy next stars in buddy cop comedy "The Heat" opposite Sandra Bullock, opening June 28 and reuniting McCarthy with her "Bridesmaids" director Paul Feig.
