Meryl Streep to join 'The Giver' as Chief Elder

Meryl-Streep.jpgThe much-anticipated film adaptation of the classic YA novel "The Giver" has scored a casting coup with the addition of the estimable Meryl Streep.

Deadline reports that Streep is set to join Jeff Bridges in the film version of Lois Lowry's novel, set to start shooting in October 2013 in South Africa, as the Chief Elder.

Streep's role will be the authoritarian charged with keeping order in a society that seems utopian. Her control is challenged when a young man (to be played by Brenton Thwaites) is chosen to be the recipient of memories of live before the "sameness" movement, which numbed the population and created conformism. Bridges will play the title character who shares the memories, which spark a sense of rebellion in the young man.

"The Giver" will be a co-production between The Weinstein Company and Walden Media, with Bridges and Nikki Silver producing.

Is Streep the right choice for the Chief Elder in "The Giver"?
