St. Louis Rams cut Michael Sam, NFL's first openly gay football player
"I will tell you this: I was pulling for Mike, I really was," Rams Coach Jeff Fisher says in a news conference Saturday after the cut, reports the New York Times. "And I don't say that very often. Mike came in here and did everything we asked him to do."
Adds Fisher, "It was a football decision, and the decision is no different than any other decision that we make. It was a football decision. It was a football decision back in May to draft Mike."
Although Sam performed "decently" in the preseason, as the Times puts it, he ultimately did not make the final cut. It's still possible for Sam to make the Rams' practice squad, the paper notes.
Sam thanked the team for their support.
