Michael Trevino returns to 'The Vampire Diaries' free of his sire bond but bound by bad bloodAdd to Favorites | The Vampire Diaries
Tyler adds an important element to the Mystic Falls dynamic, as he's the only character in town who, presumably, doesn't put Elena up on a pedestal. While everyone else in town would walk barefoot over hot coals to fetch Elena a ponytail elastic, Tyler has his own life and his own loves to worry about. He's incredibly important to Caroline, and his well-being matters to Matt, but other than that, Tyler is a wild card. He's the only one who can't be trusted to put Elena first -- even Klaus has a vested interested in keeping the doppelganger alive and healthy.
Luckily, Michael Trevino returns to the series in tonight's episode, "Heart of Darkness." By putting himself through weeks of excruciating pain, he's successfully broken the sire bond between himself and Klaus. He's not off the hook yet, though -- he may be free of the sire, but he's about to learn about a new curse. If Stefan and Damon succeed in their quest to kill Klaus, Tyler will also be sacrificed, because Tyler is part of Klaus' vampire bloodline.
"Tyler's going to learn that if Klaus dies that he dies along with him," Trevino tells Zap2it. "Our last little chapter, the last four episodes, we're going to see that play out. We'll see Tyler's reactions and where he stands on that."
We may not yet know where Tyler stands on being the sacrifice in the Salvatore quest for vengeance against Klaus, but we do know that despite Caroline, Stefan and Damon really don't care if Tyler lives or dies. "Their number one objective is to kill Klaus and whatever happens with that, if that means I have to go with them, then so be it," Trevino says.
In the midst of the potential murdering of all of the vampires ever, the Mystic Falls kids still make a little time for romance. "[Tyler and Caroline] are a little bit in shock when they see each other, having been separated for so long," he tells us. "They pick up where they left off, on a good note, so they do have some time to reunite."
On April 26, Tyler attends the Decade Dance, looking for a moment of joy with Caroline despite the life-or-death angst. It's the first dance we've seen Tyler participate in, since the Homecoming Dance was canceled.
"In the three seasons, for some reason or another, Tyler hasn't been at any of these dances. He's never there, so for me it was cool to finally be involved in that process," Trevino says. "I got a whole different getup as far as my wardrobe, and it was the first time that I actually had dance rehearsal, on 'The Vampire Diaries.' I've never had to go through that drill, so it was kind of fun."
His wardrobe is quite dapper. "I really like it because I'm in all black and Klaus is all white. I don't know if they meant to do that, trying to send a little message, but I thought it was kind of interesting," he laughs. "It plays really well with the scene when they're at the dance. We can see that it's kind of like Caroline caught in the middle between Tyler and Klaus."
It doesn't take long for Tyler to pick up on Klaus's intentions with Caroline, but while he's aware of it, he's got to keep the bigger picture in mind. In short, Tyler wants Klaus to think that he's still got him on that sire leash.
"He's biting his tongue right now, for a few episodes," Trevino teases. "Tyler has broken the sire bond, but isn't going to reveal his cards yet to Klaus. Leading up to the finale, he's going to play along with still being sired, he's biding his time, planning his attack, and I'm pretty sure it's going to get really nasty when Tyler reveals that he's not connected to Klaus anymore."
"Vampire Diaries" returns this Thursday night, April 19, at 8 p.m. EST. We know we don't have to tell you to tune in, right?
