Though Mindy McCready shot her dog before she committed suicide on Feb. 17, a source close to the country singer says that she wouldn't have done so out of anger. It's unclear why McCready felt the need to kill her pet, but the friend claims the action might have been out of compassion.

"Mindy really loved her dog and that would not have been an act of malice at all," the insider tells FOX411's Pop Tarts column. "It would have been more of a case where she just didn't want to leave the dog alone."

As for what drove the troubled star to take her own life, the source says, "She didn't really have a support network and coming home to an empty house seems to be what really did it. It is tragic. She was a sweet and kind girl at heart."

McCready is survived by her sons Zander, 6, and Zayne, 9 months.
