Misha Collins returns to 'Supernatural' and Comic-Con: Will Purgatory heal Castiel's friendship with Dean?

misha-collins-supernatural-comic-con-2012.jpgFor the second year in a row, Castiel's position in the "Supernatural" world is precarious, and the creative team is playing coy when it comes to his involvement in the upcoming season. Fortunately for Cas fans, this season is already looking better than last season in that regard -- we know that angels feature heavily in the overarching season-long story, and we can confirm that Misha Collins returns to the show in the second episode.

"That is a flashback of Purgatory, but you will see Cas again," Collins told Zap2it in the San Diego Comic-Con press room after a panel discussion in front of six thousand fans.

We did see a brief glimpse of Dean and Castiel in Purgatory in the Season 7 finale, and Castiel seemed to have his wits about him again. "I think that he's kind of in survival mode in Purgatory, so... the adrenaline is forcing him to be a little saner," Collins agrees. "I think that that's the circumstances partly. This is actually conjecture partly on my part, but yes, he's more sane. There may be further explanation as to why that is, but I think that it's probably primarily just that he's forced to be."

As far as whether Dean and Castiel's relationship will be rebuilt during the time they spend together in Purgatory, Collins stays mum. "It's possible. I actually don't know how that's gonna play out. I'm not positive," he says. He does reveal that in Season 8, Castiel will feel more like the one we fell for in Seasons 4 and 5, as opposed to the misguided man of Season 6. "I think it's more of old Cas. Well, we're not pressing hard reset, and erasing his memory, and going form there. He still has all of his past experiences, so he's not quite as naive as when he stepped off the boat, but he's more of the old Cas."

Check out the video below for more from Collins -- plus a brief special appearance by Jensen Ackles. The show returns October 3 at 9 p.m. EST, but in the meantime, you can catch more of Zap2it's "Supernatural" coverage here.
