'Mixology' star Blake Lee dishes on Tom's ex-fiance Laura, his crush Maya and more

mixology-blake-lee-interview.jpg Against all odds, Tom has managed to charm out-of-his-league Maya so far on "Mixology." Despite the fact that he's cried in front of her, talked about his ex-fiance dumping him, and messed up in so many ways, somehow she's still interested in the shy, sweet guy that's so unlike any other guy she's ever dated. Could Tom and Maya get a happy ending by the end of this season?

Maybe, but we'll have to wait to find out. "Throughout the season you'll see Tom gain confidence and learn to trust himself. And then hopefully he comes out on top," series star Blake Lee tells Zap2it.

Unfortunately, all of Tom's hard work charming Maya will hit a huge speed bump in this Wednesday's (April 2) episode, "Tom & Maya Part II," when Tom's ex-fiance Laura shows up to the bar.

"I think the audience will be surprised," Lee says. "He hasn't really thought about Laura this whole night. For the audience it's been six weeks but for Tom, this whole night he's been able to forget about her and how she ruined his life thanks to Maya. He's been so focused on Maya and this presents a new obstacle for him. So what is he going to do? Who is he going to choose? I think that everyone that Tom is at the bar with is pleasantly surprised with how he handles the situation."

That doesn't mean things will go smoothly, however. "It is the worst possible timing. You might see Tom cry again, that's an obvious thing that will happen," Lee reveals. "But everything works out in his benefit. It's actually my favorite episode."

Lee loves how Ginger Gonzaga's Maya fits into the potentially awkward situation. "Maya is kind of almost like the third dude, you know?" Lee says with a laugh. "It's like Bruce, Cal and Maya. There are some really cool moments in this episode where they get together almost as like my buddies for a minute and you see this side of Maya where she just really wants to help Tom. It's nice to see."

Even though this is the first episode to feature a couple that's already had an episode, Lee says the format of the episode will stay the same, meaning we'll learn more about Tom's backstory with flashbacks to different times in his life in addition to the ones we saw in the pilot.

"That's one of the things that is so great about the show. Now that we've gone through all the characters, you know where they grew up and you know their childhood, so now it goes back a little more recent," Lee says. "So you see really who they are today, in life. In this episode's backstory, you'll see more of me and Laura together and how she took advantage of how nice Tom is."

As for Tom's best friends Cal and Bruce, Lee thinks that even when they give awful advice it's coming from the bottom of their hearts. "They both feel like the advice they're giving Tom is right," Lee says. "Bruce's advice is way too aggressive for Tom but he genuinely thinks he's doing the right thing, and that's why they're friends. They all really do care about each other. But at the end of the day, Tom just has to trust himself and his own instincts. Bruce and Cal's advice is maybe right for them, but it's so wrong for him."

At the end of the day, Lee -- who admits that he relates to Tom the most out of all the characters -- loves watching Tom gain confidence in himself. "I'm really excited for the audience to see the progression of the Tom and Maya story," Lee says. "It makes me really happy to see this underdog hopefully winning this really hot girl. I hope I follow in Tom's footsteps."

And for all those wondering, Lee's favorite drink to enjoy while watching the show? "I like a really, really dirty martini," Lee says.
