greg-kinnear-sept-2011-gi.jpg "Modern Family" has booked Greg Kinnear for a guest appearance later this season -- his first broadcast-series role since the early 2000s.

Kinnear will play a character named Tad, one of Phil's ( Ty Burrell) new business partners, EW reports. His appearance was set up by the events of Wednesday's (Nov. 16) episode, in which Phil decides to leave his real estate company and join two colleagues in a new firm.

Phil has nothing but admiration for Tad -- which given what we know of Phil is hardly a surprise -- but Claire ( Julie Bowen) is rather less impressed. Which is also no surprise.

The part will be Kinnear's first appearance on a network series since he guested on a "Friends" episode in the fall of 2003. He earned an Emmy nomination this year for his starring role in the miniseries "The Kennedys" and most recently starred with Sarah Jessica Parker. in "I Don't Know How She Does It."

Kinnear's "Modern Family" episode is set to air early next year.
