'Mom' lands Justin Long as love interest, Octavia Spencer as a 'bigger mess than' Anna FarisAdd to Favorites | Mom
CBS' new comedy "Mom" is about a newly sober single mom Christy (Anna Faris) struggling to raise her two children while her formerly estranged mother (Allison Janney) comes back into Christy's life, eager to share passive-aggressive insights into her daughter's many mistakes. But the biggest bit of news to come out of the CBS TCA press tour panel on Monday (July 29) was the announcement of two upcoming guest stars: Justin Long and Octavia Spencer. So who are they going to play?
"There is going to be a love interest in Christy's life played by Justin Long," executive producer Chuck Lorre revealed. "We're really excited about that. That's going to come up in the first few episodes. Poor b****** doesn't know what he's in for. He's going to be her first shot at a meaningful relationship."
Meanwhile, Oscar-winner Spencer is going to get to try her hand at playing an extremely flawed character in the fifth episode. "She's playing a woman who turns out to have bigger problems than Christy," Lorre said. "So Christy gets perspective."
"Oh, thank god!" Faris replied.
But don't worry: this isn't just a show about a woman who's a mess, surrounded by other messes. EP Gemma Baker promises there is redemption in Christy's sights. "This isn't just a show about addiction. It's about a character that made some mistakes in her life and is trying to get better," Baker said. "Anna is so loveable so it's easy to root for her. She's really trying to start over."
"Mom" premieres Monday, Sept. 23, at 9:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
