Morgan Freeman calls Tea Partiers the 'racist' underside of America
Don't number Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman among fans of the Tea Party, the radically conservative new arm of the Republican party. In an interview with CNN's Piers Morgan, Freeman labels Tea Partiers racists whose sole aim is to prevent President Obama from winning another term in office.
"The Tea Partiers who are controlling the Republican party," says Freeman. "Their publicly stated policy is to do whatever it takes to see that Obama serves only one term. What underlies that? Screw the country -- we're going to do whatever we can to get this black man out of here."
"But it's not a racist thing?" says Morgan.
"It is a racist thing," replies Freeman.
"It shows the weak, dark underside of America," continues the actor. "We're supposed to be better than that."
He credits Obama with rising above the Tea Party's mud-slinging tactics, but does admit that the president could be doing a better job to keep them from gaining influence. Still, he remains confident that Obama will prevail and serve a second term in the Oval Office.
"You see how hard he's tried and how far he's fought against them, and he's going to do it."
