Movie Bites: Johnny Depp set to play 'Tourist,' 'Slumdog' team bound for survival

It must be a bad time to be a tourist in any capacity, recession notwithstanding.

"The Tourist" is one film that has had Charlize Theron, Tom Cruise, and Sam Worthington attached to it at one point or another, but all have ultimately left the Sony Pictures production. Now, Johnny Depp's name is in the mix to play opposite Angelina Jolie, reports Variety.

The flick centers on an American tourist who goes undercover on behalf of Interpol to entrap a former lover suspected of being a global criminal. Production is set to begin in February 2010.

--  In other film news, director Danny Boyle will direct Fox Searchlight's upcoming film "127 Hours," the story of mountaineer Aron Ralston, who had to amputate his forearm when it became trapped under a boulder.

Boyle was the man behind the lens of the eight-Oscar winner "Slumdog Millionaire." Boyle will be joined by "Slumdog" creatives Simon Beaufoy and Christian Colson. Actors have yet to be chosen for the project that is set to begin production next year.
