'Muppets' movie filming, writer/star Jason Segel 'couldn't be more excited'Add to Favorites | The Muppet Show
But if you're concerned the film is going to be weirdly modern (like the unfortunate "Muppets in Space"), writer and human star Jason Segel wants to ease your fears.
When Zap2it recently spoke with Segel on the set of his series, "How I Met Your Mother," he explained which Muppet ventures inspired him and teased some story details.
"It's kind of hearkening back to the old style of Muppets movies," says Segel, "'Muppets take Manhattan' and the original, 'The Muppet Movie.' I couldn't be more excited. There's a whole generation of people who really don't know who the Muppets are."
"Hopefully it will be something the whole family can enjoy," he says. "Our generation has all these nostalgic feelings for the Muppets."
That nostalgia is what drove him to tackle the project -- and what got him through the demanding schedule of writing it (with "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" director Nicholas Stoller) while maintaining his full time job. "I'm pretty busy with the show ["HIMYM"], and sometimes you feel like, 'Wow, we just wrapped at 8. I'm going to go home and write from 10 to 2 in the morning?' But every time you write the name 'Kermit' or 'Piggy,' all of the stress just goes away."
Hopefully sharing scenes with the Muppets will ease his burden of his shooting schedule too, because Segel will be working on the movie set while filming the sixth season of "HIMYM."
As for the plot, details are still thin, and the roles of Segel and co-stars Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, Rashida Jones and Miranda Cosgrove are unknown. "I can only tell the very rough premise," says Segel. "The Muppets have all disbanded throughout the world, for various reasons, and get back together to put on a show to save their studio."
If you can't wait to see them together, Disney has a first publicity still of their "table read" with Segel. "The Muppets" hits theaters Christmas, 2011.
