The event was suspended after Leffler was pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m. local time, reports the AP.

"NASCAR extends its thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies to the family of Jason Leffler who passed away earlier this evening. For more than a decade, Jason was a fierce competitor in our sport and he will be missed," says NASCAR racing in a statement.

Leffler began racing in 1999 and won two Nationwide series races. He also finished 17th in the 2000 Indianapolis 500. The last full NASCAR season he raced was 2011, when he finished sixth in the standings.

After losing his NASCAR ride following that season, Leffler has been racing sprint cars. He is survived by a 5-year-old son, Charlie.
