In late-November, celebrity interior designer and talk show host, Nate Berkus, made headlines when he was rushed to the hospital after shooting a segment with the "Today" show.
"I didn't know what was wrong with me," Berkus tells Zap2it. "And, so I knew when I was doing the segment that as soon as this was over, I was pretty much going to fall apart and go to the hospital."
Berkus is one of those people who makes us feel like we can do anything, so we're not surprised that Berkus went through with the segment despite the pain.
"I felt like 'this is weird. I've never felt so badly before,'" he remembers. "But, I just knew I had to get through that segment. I remember thinking to myself, "it's literally a minute-and-a-half. I can do anything for a minute-and-a-half.'"
Later at the hospital, he learned that he had appendicitis and would need to go right into surgery. Berkus, who had recently told us that he had very little actual downtime since starting "The Nate Berkus Show," was forced to postpone shooting while he recuperated. Now, Berkus is totally healed and says he actually enjoyed the forced rest.
"I'm feeling absolutely great," he says. "I highly recommend an appendectomy. I was in bed for nine days, on strong drugs, wearing pajamas from Harpo and eating the best deli food New York has to offer."
Leave it to Berkus to find the silver lining of an emergency appendectomy!
A couple weeks before his surgery, we sat down with Berkus in New York City, where he told us how he likes to spend his downtime, the warning fellow Oprah Winfrey graduate, Dr. Oz, gave him before starting his talk show and about his love for all things Bravo.
