National Donut Day: Free doughnuts!
Legend has it the holiday was created in 1938 by the Salvation Army to honor women who distributed doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. It has, of course, morphed into more of a typical American (commercial) holiday in recent years, though.
Krispy Kreme is offering free doughnuts to customers from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at participating locations -- any variety and no purchase necessary. Dunkin Donuts, on the other hand, is also offering a free doughnut -- but only if you buy a beverage.
In case you're wondering, we're opting for glazed.
