NBC's 'The Sound of Music' adds three Tony winners to cast of live special

On Monday (Sept. 16), the Peacock announced that Tony winners Audra McDonald, Laura Benanti and Christian Borle will be joining Carrie Underwood and Stephen Moyer during the Dec. 5 production of the classic musical.

McDonald ("Private Practice"), a five-time Tony winner, will portray Mother Abbess, while Benanti ("Go On") will take on the role of Elsa Schrader. Borle ("Smash") is set to play Max Dettweiler. As previously announced, Underwood will play Maria, while Moyer will Capt. Georg Von Trapp.

On the same day of NBC's casting announcement, Underwood tweeted her fans their first look at the "American Idol" winner in character. Take a look at the new photo below.

"The Sound of Music" airs live Thursday, Dec. 5 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
