'NCIS' spinoff: CBS prepping planted series produced by Mark Harmon

mark-harmon-ncis-spinoff-cbs.jpgCBS is kicking its spinoff machine back into high gear with a report that the network is planning to plant a new series in the world of its hit drama "NCIS."

Deadline reports that the network is working on a new offshoot of the "NCIS" world, which will be introduced in a two-part "NCIS" episode slated to shoot in February and air in the spring. The planted spinoff, to be executive produced by original series star and executive producer Mark Harmon along with showrunner Gary Glasberg, will be set in New Orleans.

The character-driven project, to be written by Glasberg, will center on the NCIS New Orleans office, which handles cases from Pensacola through Mississippi and Louisiana to the Texas panhandle. New Orleans was chosen as the series' home base because it's a city of music, fun and debauchery, making it a magnet for military personnel on leave. Naturally, with that fun comes trouble.

This would mark the second spinoff from the long-running series, which also begat "NCIS: Los Angeles," which also kicked off as a two-part episode of the parent series. CBS attempted to use the LA offshoot to spawn a series of its own last season, with the proposed "NCIS: Red" shot as a backdoor pilot, however the network ultimately passed.

Do you think the world needs another "NCIS" spinoff?
