'New Girl' Season 3, episode 20: The Jess-Nick relationship goes up in flames for 'Mars Landing'Add to Favorites | New Girl
That's what Jess and Nick find out the hard way in "Mars Landing" when True American, the future of space travel and a child's toy lead to a break-up.
The infinite heartache of True American
The whole thing begins the morning-after, when Nick and Jess are supposed to go to Sadie the gynecologist's son's birthday party. Alas, Nick hasn't put together the toy yet. And semi-drunk Jess doesn't know better than to detail her entire life-story of future plans for the relationship.
Nick gets a little scared. Jess gets apprehensive. They both realize that they have pretty much opposite views on future planning. Also, Nick wants to be a long-distance trucker on Mars, while Jess wants a house by a lake in Portland.
Their fighting comes to a head when Nick accidentally sets a blanket on fire and the two can't stop arguing long enough to put it out. That's left to the firefighters. On the plus side, they don't need to worry about putting together the toy now!
Other stuff happens in the episode, of course. The boys all try (badly) to hit on new and hot neighbors. They end up just scaring the poor girls and breaking their stuff when manly hormones take over. Nobody is getting the sex any time soon.
Cece, meanwhile, sends creepy texts to her "child bride," the 20-year-old Australian hottie. But he conquers his fear of this drunken texter and the two go for pancakes.
Is it over?
But the Jess and Nick thing is what really matters in "Mars Landing." Are they done?
It's actually hard to say. The two end the episode pretty much exactly where they began -- loving each other and sharing Nick's bedroom (this last point courtesy of Schmidt's naked yoga happening in Jess' room).
Love isn't the issue at all. Friendship is. If these two crazy (and I do mean crazy ... like certifiably insane) kids can figure out how to be friends, it is likely that bedroom and dating activities will resume.
Especially if Schmidt never gets his clothes back on.
