We've got good news and bad news, "New Girl" fans who are dying to see Zooey Deschanel's Jess and Jake Johnson's Nick get together.
Let's rip off that Band Aid and go with the bad news first: Creator Liz Meriwether says the coupling is not going to happen any time soon. But there's good news: Meriwether very much loves the characters together and a relationship is not out of the question in the future.
"I think we love them together and we love their friendship, and this season is all about them becoming better and better friends," she tells Zap2it on the red carpet before the show's Paley Fest panel. "That's the real intimacy and connection that we were looking for."
But Meriwether, her fellow executive producers and the entire writing staff are aware that some fans out there are desperately hoping for a Jess and Nick hookup. "We've read some amazing fan fiction," she reveals. "One day we pulled up some super dirty fan fiction and we were all, like, dying."
The stories, aside from giving Meriwether some ideas for her personal life (she jokes), are a long way from coming to fruition -- if ever, considering they were pretty filthy stories. "The things that Nick was doing to Jess in these fans' minds were just amazing," she says, but "they probably have a while to go before they end up doing what some fan fiction already has them doing."
Johnson says he hopes that Nick and Jess do get together eventually. "I think as an actor it'd be fun to do. As a fan of the show, I think Nick really likes Jess, so as somebody who plays Nick and who wants Nick to be happy, I'm like 'Yeah, I think he should be with her.' But I don't think it's going to work out for him for a while," he tells Zap2it, even though "there's a connection between the two of them."
Deschanel says that although she isn't sure about where the writers are taking the characters, she's a big fan of working with Johnson. "I don't know what's going to happen, but we're just building on all that tension. I really love working with Jake Johnson," she says. "I just hope they keep giving me scenes with him."
