Newseek declares Barack Obama the 'first gay president'

newsweek-obama-gay-president.jpgJust a week after Time magazine made a splashy impact with a cover featuring a mother breastfeeding her almost four-year-old son, Newsweek is trying its hand at shock and awe. A cover featuring a portrait of President Barack Obama crowned with a rainbow halo declares him "The First Gay President."

The accompanying article by Andrew Sullivan tracks Obama's evolution when it comes to gay rights and why the President's life as a biracial man "has deep ties to the gay experience."

In a satiric letter published on The Washington Post's website, Mitt and Ann Romney write Newsweek chief Tina Brown to thank her for the magazine's gift to Romney's conservative GOP campaign for the White House.'

"I'm not about to go stoking the flames of anti-gay fervor in my base," writes Jennifer Rubin in the faux letter. "That's not my style, and as I always say to Ann, a moment not talking about Obama's economic bellyflop is a moment wasted. But you've done it for me!"

Newsweek is echoing Nobel laureate Toni Morrison, who in a 1998 New Yorker article dubbed then President Bill Clinton "the first black president" because of the qualities he shared, per Morrison, with African-Americans and the persecution he was suffering for the same.
