Newt Gingrich slams CNN for discussing open marriage claim in debate

newt-gingrich-cnn-getty.jpgJust hours after Newt Gingrich's ex-wife Marianne tells ABC News that Republican presidential contender wanted an open marriage, the topic showed up front and center with a  a question about it during a CNN-sponsored debate. And that's when Gingrich had enough.

Gingrich tells debate moderator John King, "I think the destructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media makes it harder to govern this country, harder to attract decent people to run for public office, and I am appalled that you would begin a presidential debate on a topic like that."

But Gingrich wasn't done ripping the CNN anchor for leading off the debate with such a question.

"I am frankly astounded that CNN would take trash like that and use it to open a presidential debate," Gingrich says. "The story is false. Every personal friend I have who knew us in that period says the story was false...I am tired of the elite media protecting Barack Obama by attacking Republicans."

In an ABC interview, Marianne says that when Newt admitted a six-year affair with a Congressional aide Callista Bisek, he proposed the open marriage. Bisek married Gingrich in 2000.

"He wanted an open marriage and I refused," Marianne tells ABC News.
