Nick Cannon's name will get you jewelry if you work things right. A man claiming to be an assistant to the "America's Got Talent" host managed to steal thousands of dollars in jewelry from the Fred Segal apparel store in Santa Monica.

According to TMZ.com, a man who identified himself as Michael called the store and said he worked for Nick Cannon. Michael then said that Cannon needed jewelry for wife Mariah Carey.

A Fred Segal employee was sent to meet Michael at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, but a different man actually met her. This man identified himself as a hotel security guard and took the jewelry up to what was supposedly Cannon's room. The idea seems to have been to return with cash in exchange for the goods.

He didn't come back.

Although the specific value of the stolen merchandise has not been made public, it is believed to be significant. The Los Angeles police are looking into the case.
