Nick Cannon's whiteface photo on Instagram: Funny, offensive or both?Add to Favorites | America's Got Talent
Posted on Sunday (March 23), the photo shows an elated Cannon wearing rather impressive (and probably professional) "whiteface" makeup so as to appear Caucasian for the camera.
The caption for the picture reads: "#WHITEPEOPLEPARTYMUSIC ... #GoodCredit #DogKissing #BeerPong #FarmersMarkets #FistPumping #CreamCheeseEating #RacialDraft 'Bro I got drafted!!'"
Is it a racial stereotype that white people eat cream cheese? The things you learn on the Internet ...
Whatever the case of the stereotypes and the photo itself, the issue for most people tends to be how this can be acceptable if a white celebrity wearing blackface is offensive. The result is one of the Internet's very favorite things: A controversy in which no side can claim the whole truth, thereby allowing endless conversation.
As for Cannon, he seems unworried about starting trouble. Talking to Us Weekly about the album, the actor and TV host says, "You go to a party and white people are having more fun than anybody. They know how to have a good time! I could have named the album 'Purple People Party Music' and you'd still get the same album, but it was just one of those things. You know, you deal with things like race, and people get uptight, so why not?"
The really sad part about all of this? But for the "racism" some people have read into the picture, Cannon's photo and accompanying caption would be hilarious. The joke, as it is, gets to be yet another victim of racism. It's too bad.
