Nick's 'Instant Mom': Sort of like ABC's 'Trophy Wife,' but not really
Replace the names with Malin Akerman and Bradley Whitford, and you have the description of another new comedy, ABC's "Trophy Wife."
It's something that happens nearly every TV season -- two shows with very similar premises and (sometimes) execution. "Instant Mom" executive producer Aaron Kaplan is aware of "Trophy Wife" and says "it's a great show," but he's not worried about comparisons.
"Yes, it's a blended family, but ['Trophy Wife' is] a single-camera comedy, it's a big kind of tribute to Nancy Meyers, and in execution and content it's just a very different show," Kaplan said Friday (July 26) at the TCA summer press tour.
"This show is something that came out of real life, and [writer] Howard Gould brought even more life to this project. The chronology of it -- this show was first, but that's an irrelevant fact because it's a different show. In a weird way, you could say 'Lost' was 'Gilligan's Island.' Television in so many ways is complementary, and there are only so many ideas. It's really all about execution."
"Instant Mom," which also stars Sheryl Lee Ralph, is set to premiere in the fall as part of the NickMom programming block.
