Obama brain study to make artificial intelligence a reality or cure disease?

barack-obama-brain-study-gi.jpgThe Barack Obama administration is planning a human brain study project that will last a decade and is likely to result in strides in the area of artificial intelligence.

While Big Brother theorists worry "Terminator" is on its way to becoming a reality, scientists are hopeful the research will pave the way to treatments for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, as well as mental illness.

The New York Times reports Obama let the Brain Activity Map project slip in his recent State of the Union address, saying "Today our scientists are mapping the human brain to unlock the answers to Alzheimer's." Scientists involved with the project say it will cost the federal government at least $3 billion over the next 10 years.

Nanotechnologists and neuroscientists will use newly available technology that can identify the 100 billion firing neurons in the brain to create a model map of the organ that remains one of science's greatest mysteries.

Scientists plan to create a number of brain observatories to accompany mass amounts of computer storage and analysis facilities. The brain mapping project is expected to being in March. While Obama predicts finding the key to Alzheimer's, others say potential exists for new artificial intelligence technology. So, which will happen first? The next 10 years will tell the tale.
