Obama fundraiser at George Clooney's house expected to raise $15 million
According to the Los Angeles Times, the rest of the expected $15 million tally is coming from online contest participants who contributed donations averaging $23 each for a chance to win a ticket for themselves and a guest to the event.
The pool of entrants was narrowed to 50 by a random drawing, with the campaign then doing a background check on those participants. The two winners' identities will be revealed Thursday.
"It's a stunning turnout of support, and what's really interesting to me is that almost two-thirds of the money is coming from grass-roots support, from the 99 percent," says DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, who organized the fundraiser with political advisor Andy Spahn.
