bob-costas-eye-winter-olympics.gifIf you tuned into the first 2014 Winter Olympics primetime broadcast on NBC Thursday (Feb. 6), you may have noticed that host Bob Costas was looking a little wonky in one eye. He addressed the problem right at the top of the show:

"Bear with me for a moment as I spare my friends in the press office countless inquiries. ... I woke up this morning with my left eye swollen shut and just about as red as the old Soviet flag. According to the NBC doctors here, it's some kind of minor infection, which should resolve itself by the weekend. If only all my issues would resolve themselves that quickly. But that's another story."

Costas' assistant also tells Deadspin that the infection has made it impossible for the sportscaster to wear contact lenses, so he "has no choice but to go with the glasses on air."

Awww. You're handsome either way, Bob.
