Olympics opening ceremony: Who is Tim Berners-Lee?
During a long musical medley, Berners-Lee is revealed in front of a computer keyboard into which he types a message, which is then rendered in lights in the stands of Olympic Stadium: "This is for everyone."
Unfortunately, Vieira -- who was co-anchoring NBC's coverage with Matt Lauer -- wasn't familiar with Berners-Lee's work and she said as much on the air.
"The title of this section is 'Frankie and Jean say Thanks Tim." Tim Berners-Lee, if you haven't heard of him -- we haven't either -- he's the man credited with creating the World Wide Web," says Vieira.
Immediately, Mr. Berners-Lee's creation lit up with criticism for NBC and Vieira who were none too pleased about Vieira's knowledge gap.
"Dear @NBC, Timothy Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web that hastened your network's irrelevance," tweeted one.
