Oscars In Memoriam 2014: Cory Monteith, Dennis Farina, Sarah Jones and more misses

Forgetting stars in the Academy Awards "In Memoriam" segment is almost as much a tradition as the fashion and speeches. But which stars missed out on live Oscars broadcast in 2014? Cory Monteith, Dennis Farina, Sarah Jones and Tom Clancy are among those not memorialized on TV.

Thanks to the Internet, the 86th Academy Awards can claim to honor just about everyone in film who died. Still, there's a bit of a slight felt by fans of those deemed unworthy for the telecast. Here are some of the biggest names left out of the video:

  • Jonathan Winters -- Died: April 11, 2013. Claim to Oscar fame: "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," "The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming," "The Smurfs"
  • Gary David Goldberg -- Died: June 22, 2013. Claim to Oscar fame: "Must Love Dogs," sitcoms from "Family Ties" to "Spin City"
  • Cory Monteith -- Died: July 13, 2013. Claim to Oscar fame: "Glee," "Monte Carlo"
  • Dennis Farina -- Died: July 22, 2013. Claim to Oscar fame: "Get Shorty," "Saving Private Ryan," "Snatch," "Midnight Run"
  • Lee Thompson Young -- Died: Aug. 19, 2013. Claim to Oscar fame: "Akeelah and the Bee," "Friday Night Lights," "Rizzoli & Isles"
  • Tom Clancy -- Died: Oct. 1, 2013. Claim to Oscar fame: Author of "The Hunt for Red October" and all other Jack Ryan stories
  • Marcia Wallace -- Died: Oct. 25, 2013. Claim to Oscar fame: "The Simpsons," "Monsters University"
  • Nelson Mandela -- Died: Dec. 5, 2013. Claim to Oscar fame: Subject of 2013's "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" and 2009's "Invictus"
  • James Avery -- Died: Dec. 31, 2013. Claim to Oscar fame: "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air," "The Blues Brothers" (first on-screen role)
  • Alicia Rhett -- Died: Jan. 3, 2014. Claim to Oscar fame: "Gone with the Wind"
  • Ruth Duccini -- Died: Jan. 16, 2014. Claim to Oscar fame: "The Wizard of Oz" (last surviving female Munchkin)
  • Russell Johnson -- Died: Jan. 16, 2014. Claim to Oscar fame: "This Island Earth," "It Came from Outer Space," "Gilligan's Island"
  • Jim Jacks -- Died: Jan. 20, 2014. Claim to Oscar fame: Producer of "The Mummy," "Dazed and Confused"
  • Sarah Jones -- Died: Feb. 20, 2014. Claim to Oscar fame: "Midnight Rider"
    (Note: Jones, the subject of a campaign to get her into the In Memoriam segment, did get a mention on-screen as the show went to commercial but was not in main montage.)
  • Alice Herz-Sommer -- Died: Feb. 23, 2014. Claim to Oscar fame: Subject of Oscar-winning "The Lady in Number 6" documentary
  • Alain Resnais -- Died: March 1, 2014. Claim to Oscar fame:  director of "Hiroshima, mon amour"

Were these names the academy was right to ignore? Or should they have been included in the live show?
