'Pacific Rim' trailer cancels the apocalypse with Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba
Let's get this out of the way up front: The new trailer for "Pacific Rim" looks so. freaking. cool. If you weren't already on board with Guillermo del Toro's giant monsters versus giant robots summer blockbuster -- or thought it was just a "Transformers" rip-off -- then this trailer should be the thing that convinces you otherwise.
Starring Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi as two pilots of the massive Jaeger robots, "Pacific Rim" tells the post-apocalyptic story of humanity's fight for survival following the invasion of the ginormous Kaiju creatures. It's basically Warner Bros. letting del Toro go nuts on his version of a Japanese giant monster movie, which should excite fans of the director's previous movies like "Pan's Labyrinth," "Hellboy" and "Cronos."
Visually "Pacific Rim" looks stunning, and this trailer offers up the best look yet at some of the big action scenes between the Kaiju and the Jaeger. But it also teases the film's exciting ensemble cast, including Idris Elba, Charlie Day and Ron Perlman. Day seems to be acting as the movie's comic relief, but at least it seems like he's moved away from his "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" shtick here. Count us on board.
"Pacific Rim" hits theaters on July 12.
