Patent Pending: All about the 2012 Billboard Battle of the Bands winners

patent-pending-singer-abc.jpgWhile the 2012 Billboard Music Awards was heavy with performances from artists we know and love like Justin Bieber and Alicia Keys, there was also a brand new band on the roster you might not have heard of: Patent Pending. The pop-punk band from Long Island, New York won the 2012 Billboard Battle of the Bands on May 18, earning them a performance slot during the May 20 BBMA broadcast.

The mohawked lead singer and his bandmates looked the part as they jumped around the stage -- these guys certainly have a lot of energy -- to their synth- and guitar-driven pop-punk music. While it's not everyone's cup of tea, we can see how their enthusiasm and energy won them the competition -- and has earned them slots at The Warped Tour and Bamboozle music festivals, along with gigs opening for well-known bands, over the past decade.

Patent Pending won enough online votes to make it to the Battle of the Bands final in Los Angeles, and won over judges including Billboard editorial director Bill Werde, Billboard.com managing editor Jessica Letkemenn, BBMAs producer Charlie Hagel and Island Def Jam exec Laura Swanson. Taio Cruz hosted the competition.

If we're being completely honest, we weren't completely sold on their BBMA performance but we're totally digging the music video for "Douchebag," a single they posted on their website. What do you think?
