'Person of Interest' Season 3: Pour one out for Carter in 'Provenance' - Recap
"Person of Interest" delivered another relatively standalone episode in Season 3's "Provenance." Putting Shaw at the forefront as the team tries to save a gymnast-turned-thief named Kelly from death, this episode did a great job ramping up the audience's empathy for Shaw.
Much like in episode 5 "Razgovor," episode 14 allowed audiences to get a bit more of a peek into the mind of Sarah Shahi's character. Shaw is a lot like Kelly in many ways, and it's clear that she admires the thief -- especially once she finds out Kelly is only doing illegal things to protect her daughter.
At the end of the episode, the team saves Kelly and reunites her with her daughter. She gets an out from all her past indiscretions, and it makes one wonder if Shaw is secretly hoping for the same thing. Shaw is also living off the grid, but does that mean she always needs to stay teamed with Finch, Reese and Fusco? Or could she start being a normal person again too?
All in all, "Provenance" was a solid episode, though it didn't move along the show's overarching plotlines. No talk of Root here, and not a single mention of Control or Vigilance. But the fact "Provenance" did take the time to offer some more insight into Shaw is welcome considering the full throttle forward momentum of Season 3.
At least Carter was not forgotten. The best moment of the episode came at its end, when Reese, Fusco, Shaw and Finch sit around a table together. While Fusco speculates how they would do as a team of thieves, Reese makes a point to pour out a drink for Carter and note that one of their teammates is absent. He is still hung up on Carter's loss, even if everyone else is trying to move forward.
But Fusco doesn't seem willing to let Reese stay hung up forever. Though all four of the team take a moment of silence for Carter, Fusco is quick to continue on his conversation about thievery with himself. And thank goodness, too. While "Person of Interest" is a different show without Taraji P. Henson, it can't keep playing homage to her character for the rest of the season. It's time to move forward.
