Pope gets more than half a million Twitter followers without sending a single tweet
The Pope hasn't tweeted yet, but he's already got 594,800 followers -- and counting -- on Twitter.
The Vatican unveiled Pope Benedict XVI's official Twitter account, @Pontifex, without much pomp or circumstance earlier this week. Benedict XVI is the first Pope to join Twitter -- surprise, surprise -- though he hasn't shown off his tech savvy yet.
His Holiness hasn't added anyone exciting to the shortlist of Twitter users he's following since the account was activated. No, the Pope has no interest in what Kim Kardashian or Justin Bieber are up to, and instead is only subscribed to seven versions of his own account that are translated into Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, Polish, German and Arabic. All together, those accounts have accumulated more than half a million subscribers.
Though his number of Twitter followers will likely continue to rise without much encouragement, it will be interesting to see how long it takes before the Pope sends out his first tweet. Hopefully one of his assistants has taught him what "YOLO" means before he officially delves into the black hole that is the Internet.
