'Private Practice' hires Matt Long, Rob Riggle is 'New Girl's' new Schmidt and more TV casting

matt-long-gi.jpgHungry? Here are some TV snacks:

- There's a new doctor heading to the halls of St. Ambrose hospital -- Matt Long ("Mad Men," "Jack & Bobby") has joined the cast of "Private Practice" in a recurring role for Season 6. Long will play a new doc when the show picks up a few months after the Season 5 finale. With Pete leaving Seaside Wellness (Tim Daly is not returning to the show), hopefully Long's character will fill that void. [ TV Guide]

- Speaking of "Private Practice," we'll meet another new character when the show returns. Alfre Woodard will play the mother of Taye Diggs' character, Sam Bennett, in an episode scheduled to air in November. Woodard has also guest-starred on Shonda Rhimes' other ABC show, "Grey's Anatomy." [ Entertainment Weekly]

- Another Schmidt is moving into the "New Girl" loft -- for one day, that is. Rob Riggle will play Schmidt, the cousin and mortal enemy of Max Greenfield's Schmidt who joins the gang for Thanksgiving. [ TVLine]

- Wilmer Valderrama is moving back to "Suburgatory." He'll appear in a Season 2 episode when Dallas hires his new-age healer to fix her dog's energy. [ TV Guide]

- Get ready to dig deeper into Cary Agos' backstory on "The Good Wife" -- we'll be meeting the lawyer's father when the CBS drama returns for Season 4. The Agos patriarch will be played by John Shay, who has recurred on "Gossip Girl" as Blair Waldorf's father. Papa Agos kicked his son out of the house at 18 so he could fend for himself, so it's safe to assume the father-son relationship isn't the best. [ TVLine]
