Proposition 8 ruled unconstitutional, Hollywood reacts via Twitter

ellen-portia.jpgChief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker overturned California's gay marriage ban on August 4, proclaiming that Proposition 8, which passed with 52% of the vote in November 2008, is unconstitutional.

The decision is a response to lawsuits filed by two gay couples and by the city of San Francisco who said that the law was an infringement on the rights of gay and lesbian people.

Lawyers for the religious and conservative groups who funded the Proposition 8 campaign have already filed a motion asking Judge Walker to stay his decision in anticipation of an appeal to be filed. [ Update: The judge has issued the stay. Until further ruling, gay marriages are still on hold in California to prevent married couples being stuck in legal limbo during the appeals process.]

In the meantime, Hollywood is voicing their support via Twitter. "Modern Family's" Jesse Tyler Ferguson writes, " Amazing news about Prop 8 in CA!" Alyssa Milano simply tweeted the hashtag "#NOH8."
