'Puss in Boots' claws its way to the top of Friday's box office
The "Shrek" spinoff/fairy-tale update starring the voice of Antonio Banderas earned an estimated $9.6 million on Friday (Oct. 28). That puts it on pace to earn in the neighborhood of $35 million for the weekend, which would break the all-time record for a Halloween weekend opening. That mark currently belongs to "Saw III," which made $33.6 million in 2006.
"Paranormal 3" came in second on Friday, earning an additional $6.5 million. That's a pretty big drop from its opening last weekend, but it's still on track to make about $20 million by the end of the weekend.
The Justin Timberlake sci-fi thriller "In Time" opened in third place with $4.3 million. The weekend's other wide release, "The Rum Diary," didn't fare as well. The film, based on Hunter S. Thompson's book and starring Johnny Depp, made only $1.8 million to tie for fourth place with "Footloose."
The limited release of "Anonymous" -- which explores the idea that William Shakespeare didn't write the plays credited to him -- made an estimated $350,000 in 265 theaters.
