The first weekend of the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has come to an end. As with every other year, it was a weekend filled with performances by dozens of musicians and bands, along with a handful of surprises.
On Saturday (April 13), the rumor going around the festival was that a electronic duo Daft Punk would join French indie band Phoenix on stage. After a teaser video for a new Daft Punk album was played for the crowd Friday (April 12), it wasn't crazy to think they would be performing in some capacity.
Instead, Phoenix introduced R. Kelly as a special guest. That's a dramatic change for a crowd expecting Daft Punk, but they seemed to take it in stride as Kelly belted out the opening of "Bump n' Grind," before joining Phoenix in a mash-up of his single "Ignition (Remix)" and their hit "1901."
Other performances came from groups like Wu-Tang Clan, The Stone Roses, Blur, and Sunday's (April 14) headliner, Red Hot Chili Peppers. With Coachella being a two-weekend festival, the same lineup will perform again April 19-21.
