'Ray Donovan' and 'Masters of Sex' return to Showtime in July

The cable channel says the second seasons of "Ray Donovan" and "Masters of Sex" will premiere Sunday, July 13. "Ray Donovan" aired in the summer of 2013, but it's an early return for "Masters of Sex," which debuted last fall.

Both shows are coming off successful first years. "Ray Donovan," starring Liev Schreiber as an L.A. fixer with a troubled family life, drew 5.7 million weekly viewers last year (all platforms included), a record for a rookie Showtime series. Season 2 will deal with the fallout from fugitive mobster Sully's (James Woods) death for Ray, his dad (Jon Voight) and the head of the FBI's L.A. office, played by recurring guest star Hank Azaria.

"Masters of Sex" drew 4.8 million weekly viewers in its first season airing after "Homeland" in the fall. It will pick up the lives of sex researchers William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) as they continue their pioneering work and grow closer to one another personally.

The move of "Masters of Sex" leaves the post-"Homeland" spot open in the fall. That seems a likely place for new drama "The Affair," about an extramarital relationship and its effects on the people involved.
