Real-life 'Jaws' off Hamptons is swimming away from shore
She swam down to warmer waters in Florida around Christmas, before returning up north to the vacation hotspot. Luckily, it's January, so there's not a lot of people looking for a swim in the Atlantic Ocean. The Coast Guard reports that Mary Lee is actually moving further away from the shoreline. So, unlike Bruce, the shark from "Jaws," Mary Lee seems to be fairly harmless at this point.
While Mary Lee is actually named after the mother of Ocearch chairman, Chris Fischer, the name also has a "Jaws" connection. Quint, Robert Shaw's character, who captains the boat that goes to hunt the shark, recites a short poem while preparing to set sail. "Here lies the body of Mary Lee; died at the age of a hundred and three. For fifteen years she kept her virginity; not a bad record for this vicinity."
