Reese Witherspoon drops python purse after animal cruelty video

reese-witherspoon-getty-pyt.jpg Reese Witherspoon is hanging up her python-skin purse after complaints from animal rights activists came on the heels of her being photographed with the bag by paparazzi. PETA says that Witherspoon has contacted them and said she will never carry the bag in public again after watching a video depicting the cruelty performed on snakes in the name of fashion.

PETA says in a statement, "We've long known Reese to be a kind person, so we're pleased - and not surprised - that she is hanging up her python bag for good. We hope Reese's honest mistake will serve as a reminder for all of us to be extra-certain that what we're buying is mock crock or fake snake."

The bag actually would be illegal if sold in California. Under California Penal Code section 653o, importing python (among a laundry list of other animals) into the state for commercial purposes, which includes possession with intent to sell, is illegal. It is not illegal, however, to buy python material elsewhere and bring it into California.

Reese has always struck us as a really upstanding celebrity, so are confident it was an honest mistake.
