If you were one of the many wondering why Reese Witherspoon is looking down in her mug shot, People magazine has the answer. The "Mud" star was too drunk to hold her head up for a photo.
"She was wobbly," says an Atlanta Department of Corrections source of Witherspoon. "She didn't need help walking, but she wasn't at a point where we could get a really clear picture." The mag's police source says this mug shot was actually better than the first one they took.
"On another picture, [Reese] sort of bent down at the waist and we got the top of her head," the insider explains. "She wasn't being difficult or rude, but her motor skills weren't what they needed to be."
Peter Odom, a criminal defense attorney in Atlanta, says Witherspoon's mug shot shows she received preferential treatment from the cops. "You can't look down in the photograph," Odom says. "They will grab your head and move it into the right position to get the right mugshot. But in this case, protocol was definitely not followed."
Well, it sounds like maybe the cops knew who she was after all.
Reese was arrested for disorderly conduct in Atlanta at the same time her husband, talent agent Jim Toth, was arrested for DUI. According to the police report, Reese asked the arresting officer, "Do you know my name?" before warning him, "You're about to find out who I am. ... You are going to be on national news."
Witherspoon later issued an apology saying in part, "I clearly had one drink too many, and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said."
