'RHONJ's' Teresa and Joe Giudice plead guilty to fraud charges, face two years in jail
TMZ reports that Teresa pled guilty to four of the counts she'd been charged with, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bankruptcy fraud, while Joe pled to five. The couple was initially indicted on a total of 41 criminal counts last year, occurring between 2001 and 2011.
As Deadline reports, Joe could get 37 to 46 months behind bars while Teresa faces a sentence of 21 to 27 months under federal guidelines, which government lawyers have expressed they wish to fully pursue. As an Italian citizen, Joe also faces possible deportation. The couple is scheduled to be sentenced on July 8.
In a statement given to Us Weekly, Teresa has expressed her regret over the case, especially in how its affecting her four children.
"Today, I took responsibility for a series of mistakes I made several years ago," she says. "I have said throughout that I respect the legal process and thus I intent to address the court directly at sentencing. I will describe the choices I made, continue to take responsibility for my decisions, and express my remorse to Judge Salas and the public.
"I am heartbroken that this is affecting my family -- especially my four young daughters, who mean more to me than anything in this world," she continues. "Beyond this, I do not intend to speak specifically about the case outside of court, at the recommendation of my attorney and out of deference to the government and our legal system."
As for whether this new development, and her possible jail time, will keep her off the hit Bravo show, TMZ reports it will not. A source close to production tells the website that "RHONJ" is currently filming Season 6 and it looking to make the Giudice's legal woes a focal point for the season.
The goal is to have the season wrapped before the pair's sentencing in July, the source says, with producers moving at a rapid pace to film everything necessary with Teresa as soon a possible.
