Robert Pattinson's Vanity Fair cover and a brief history of hot actors with animals over their shoulders

Robert Pattinson graces the cover of the April 2011 issue of Vanity Fair, and in a showing of brute masculinity and signature Pattinson je ne sais quoi, he's got an alligator around his neck.

Inside he opens up about his rumored romance with Kristen Stewart ("The media will lose interest ") his elephant co-star in the upcoming "Like Water For Elephants" ("She was the best actor I ever worked with in my life") and how fame continues to elude him in Lubbock, Texas ("No one recognized me or anything").

But what we're most interested in is how exactly that alligator didn't bite off his priceless, British face. Vanity Fair usually posts videos of their cover, but we haven't spotted one yet. So in the meantime, here are two magazine photos from the past that Pattinson's gator reminds us of...

Ryan Gosling and T.R. Knight with two far-less-intimidating looking dogs slung around their necks. Enjoy!
