'Rocky' musical heading to Broadway: Sylvester Stallone producing adaptation

The next big Broadway musical has been announced, and it's a strange one. "Rocky" will debut on Broadway in early 2014. The musical adaptation of the 1976 boxing classic is being produced by Rocky Balboa himself, Sylvester Stallone. Stallone wrote and starred in all six installments in the "Rocky" franchise.

This adaptation tells the story of Balboa, an underdog boxer, as he navigates his way through the boxing world and wins the heart of the woman he loves, Adrian. The musical's book is written by three-time Tony winner Thomas Meehan ("Annie," "The Producers" and "Hairspray") and features lyrics by Lynn Ahrens (Tony award for "Ragtime"). "I couldn't be more proud or more excited about this production and how my original story of Rocky Balboa has been brought to spectacular life onstage," Stallone says of the adaptation

The production originally opened in Germany in 2012 to rave reviews, before the decision was made to move to Broadway. Preview performances are set to begin in February at the Winter Garden Theatre, followed by an official opening in March. The cast has yet to be announced, but some of the show's music can be heard in the video above.
